Thanksgiving overseas is a very interesting experience. For us, Thanksgiving is synonymous with turkey, family and football… But being here in Nairobi, it was looking more like spaghetti and soccer matches. :) But graciously, new American friends at Food for the Hungry opened their doors and gave the hungry global nomads (us!) some good ole’ USA cooking! Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and all! What was even more interesting than the food, however, was the conversations…

We dined with a couple who have been working with Wycliffe Bible Translators for the last 28 years in northern Kenya. For the first time in the history of the world, the Daasanach tribe they work with is on the verge of having a New Testament translation in their OWN dialect, thanks to the steady work of these two faithful missionaries making known God’s eternal Word.

Today we had the chance to minister in a slum at a church service. (see photo) After Jedd preached, we were invited to the home of one of the members, a young man of 26 years old. We followed him past the piles of trash and half-clothed, barefooted children, past the Muslim mosque and into his small home made of tin siding and sloppily nailed together boards. In that tiny space, we sat and listened as he poured out his life story.

"I was a devout Muslim and my family was well-respected in our Muslim community in rural Kenya," he began. "My father was incredibly strict; he mercilessly followed the Qur’an. Our family had 12 children, but only 2 of us have survived to this day – the rest died from disease and accidents."

From Paradigm Shift’s on the ground experience in the developing world with Christian relief and development organizations, our mandate is clear and our conviction even stronger: development without Christ is a waste of time. In the perspective of eternity, life is but a breath and if truth is brushed aside to further a organizations development goals without communicating the gospel then our efforts are rubbish.
